Canadian rapper Drake was catapulted into the spotlight with the release of his mixtape, "So Far Gone," which produced the chart-topper "Best I Ever Had." Since then he has been featured on a number of hits, toured and become a staple on the playlists of various hip hop fans. His highly anticipated debut album, "Thank Me Later," is, lyrically, a bit more celebratory than the somber Gone mixtape. As far as sound, the album has everything that highlights the best of Drake's talents. It has those elements of straight hip hop along with those rhythmic moments that allow Drake to lay down some R&B-influenced vocals. What is also impressive about this album is that it mixes elements of jazz and blues and is even orchestral at times. Two hit singles have already been released, "Over," and the Kanye-produced "Find Your Love." Both cuts are a good indication of what to expect on the album and are highlights. The album's opening number "Fireworks," which features R&B singer Alicia Keys, is the perfect cut to start off the album. Fantastically produced Drake's verses are the highlights of the cut and hislyrics are among his best on the album. But lyrically, the Jay-Z assisted "Light Up" is the strongest. Jay drops a crucial verse as well as some wise words of advice for Drake over a knocking, grimy beat. "Up All Night" is another record that highlights the album. The beat is as hard as a Drake beat is going to get and the claps are a dope addition. Nicki Minaj swoops through with a nice verse and her feature on the track is appropriate as Drake clearly shouts out his Young Money fam. There are two dark horses on the album. The first is the other Kanye production, "Show Me A Good Time." Kanye once again shows his talents as a producer and Drake's delivery is great. The Jeezy-assisted "Unforgettable" is dark horse #2. You have just got to love how the snowman and Drake fuse their styles on this cut and it'srefreshing to hear Aaliyah's smooth vocals caress the beat. Don't be surprised if you see either dark horse as a future single. Three more highlights are the future single, "Miss Me," which features Lil' Wayne, "Thank Me Now," the only Timbaland production, and "Fancy" which features T.I. and vocals and production from Swizz Beatz. Fancy was originally recorded by Mary J. Blige for her last studio album but was never used. You can still hear vocals from her original recording towards the end of the cut. All in all, Drake has surely delivered an album that has substance. From top to bottom, there is a strong sense of structure and purpose on the album. It is easily the best hip hop album release this year.

Highlights are "Fireworks," "Over," "Show Me A Good Time," "Up All Night," "Fancy," "Unforgettable," "Light Up," "Miss Me," "Find Your Love," and "Thank Me Now."
