The teenager who threw a party while his mother’s decomposing body was hidden in the bedroom told police he stabbed her repeatedly because he was angry with her for scolding him about staying out late. According to Miami-Dade Police, officers found the body of Renette Emile, 35, in her apartment with 14 stab wounds to her body.
Her son Kit Darrant was arrested when he returned later with his three-year-old brother. They had both been living in the apartment with the corpse for more than a week.
On Tuesday night, four days after he allegedly murdered his mother, neighbours say he held a party and was playing loud music and laughing with friends.
The 16-year-old, a student at Dr Michael M. Krop Senior High School, confessed to investigators he killed his mother because he was angry at her for scolding him about staying out late on a week night.
According to the affidavit, he cleaned up the blood, sprinkled her body with deodorizers and laundry detergent to mask the smell and wrapped it in bedsheets.
Relatives kept calling the apartment but he told them his mother couldn’t come to the phone.
Finally, his aunt, Rena Emile, stopped by the complex on Wednesday night and discovered her sister’s body, according to the Miami Herald.
According to the affidavit, Darrant was angry with his mother after they fought about him staying out late. He decided to kill her when she went to bed.
While she was sleeping, he strangled her until she lost consciousness but when he realized she was still breathing, he got a butcher knife and stabbed her in the back of the neck before turning her over and stabbing her repeatedly in the body and arms until she was dead.
His baby brother was sleeping in the next room, according to the Miami Herald.
He went to bed and then cleaned the crime scene the next morning.
Mrs Emile said she knew as soon as she got to the apartment something was wrong because of the smell and kicked the door down.
The younger child has now been placed with relatives.
A neighbor told NBC that Durant was a ‘troubled’ boy and his mother had sent him to boot camp after he was arrested for vandalism last year.
He is believed to have been selling household items from the apartment after he killed his mother.
Both boys lived with her at the Jade Winds complex in the 1800 block of Northeast 191st Street, near North Miami Beach.
Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said: ‘The three-year-old child was given to family members and Durant was detained for questioning where he has confessed to killing his mother.’
Police were called to the house twice before – on a domestic disturbance and a reckless driving charge.
Another neighbour said a bad smell had been coming from the house for days.
